Today at Domes, Brian Toth won the first event of the 2009 APSPR (Asociacion de Profesional Surfers de Puerto Rico) season, defeating Gabriel Escudero in clean 1 to 1.5 meter waves. Toth, 23, of Isabela is a regular ASP WQS touring competitor who finished 2008 in 11th place on the APSPR rankings. He beat his fellow Puerto Rican finalist, Escudero, 23, of San Juan with wave scores of 7.7 and 6.33 in the 30 minute, man-on-man Final.

The event featured 40 men and 18 women during the two day schedule. Saturday's conditions started well with a 2 to 3 metre swell on offer at the famous Domes surf spot and organizers ran a full day of 24 heats to take advantage. Unfortunately, the swell dropped for Sunday, but most of the heats were run in the one-on-one format so that each competitor had a chance to catch two good scoring rides. Most of the competitors were from Puerto Rico, but several visiting surfers claimed a share of the $10,000 purse, including the winner of the Women's division, Karina Petroni, 20, of Atlantic Beach, Florida.
