| Posted by admin on 2008/2/25 9:23:26 (421 reads) |

In an action packed afternoon filled with drama, Darren Muschett and Liza Caban each won their first professional event at the Corona Extra Pro Surf Circuit held at Playa Domes, in the classic surf-town of Rincon, Puerto Rico. Youth was served and some fresh blood has been introduced to the Corona Circuit. The Circuit continues to expand as the Corona events are the most prestigious in the region, having a proven track record of well run contests in quality waves. This event attracted a record 78 surfers from dozens of countries to compete for their share of the $15,000 purse. Coppertone Sport threw in an extra $500 for the highest heat total on both the men’s and women’s side, won by Eric Torres and Liza Caban. The small waves didn’t dampen the spirits of the spectators; the beach was packed and the Coronas were flowing. They’ve been crowning champs here for forty years, and Rincon is affectionately known as the Capital of Surfing in Puerto Rico. The people love their surfing and they come out in droves to support it and their local surfers. Perhaps the biggest wave ridden today was the wave of enthusiastic support given to the champs who rode on to victory.

And now to the action. We started the day picking up mid way through Round #4 of the men’s with heat #5. Travis Mellem continued his winning ways while an ailing Jeff Myers overcame flu like symptoms to advance to the money round. Both visitors utilized a strong backhand attack, going vertical to dispense of the two seeded surfers. A two foot wave may not be all that impressive, but when William Sue-a Quan gets an opportunity to open up and pull off critical snaps-to-carve combos, you can’t help but to be impressed as were the judges who threw out an 8.17 for his effort. He easily won heat # 6 despite a serious cut on his right arm. In heat #7, Ramse Morales used his local knowledge to pick off a nugget of a wave, ripping it across the point for an 8.33 and won the heat with a 14.26 total, the fourth highest of the event. In the last heat of the round, Wesley Toth stepped it up big time and seemed to be in perfect sync the entire heat.
Round #2 of the women’s was next, where the seeded surfers got into the mix, but the “new blood” theme seemed to dominate the round as only Amy Murphree survived the onslaught brought on by the upstarts. Quincy Davis whacked and slashed, racking up the single highest wave score of the event with a 6.83 and subsequent heat win. Liza Caban’s combined score of 12.77 won her the heat as well as the $500 Coppertone cash for highest heat total of the event. Anastasia Ashley, Jasset Umbel, and Jenny Quan established themselves as major threats going into the Quarterfinals. Round #4 of the men’s really upped the ante and will have a tremendous impact on the season’s rankings. In heat #1, Johnny Craft won the respect and admiration of the crowd with his smooth surfing but was overcome by supergrom, Hector Santamaria and an on-fire Gabriel Escudero. It was in heat #2 that Eric Torres seemed to grow up right in front of our eyes. The young blood was surfing against his childhood heroes in the likes of Juan Ashton and Pablo Diaz and never blinked an eye, taking the win over his elders. In heat #3, Travis Mellem won his 5th consecutive heat using his patented top-to-bottom combinations. The round concluded with Carlos Cabrero slashing his way to victory.
The women’s quarterfinal decided who would go on to the man-on-man format of the semis and final. Quincy Davis and Anastasia Ashley clearly stood out and it was obvious they were bound on a collision course in the next round. Heat #2 was more intriguing, going back and forth before Jasset Umbel could nail down a 10.76 heat total for the win, with Liza Caban finishing a close second.
Quarterfinal #1 of the men’s was one of the most exciting of the event. Veteran Pablo Diaz and current #2 on the rankings Gabriel Escudero started strong, applying the pressure to the two younger competitors, Eric Torres and Hector Santamaria. Eric went to work building his scores along with his wave-count, eventually wrestling the lead away from Gabby. A vicious exchange of waves inside the final minute had the crowd chewing on their fingernails. Pablo went ballistic on a little wedge, but Hector snagged the following wave which offer a wall ripe for the picking. Hector went to town, hitting the lip and busting out the tail out the back, then worked the wave to the inside to seal the deal, and everybody cheered. The crowd barely had time to catch its breath when Carlos Cabrero wowed them with slashing, fin-busting cutbacks and tail sliding maneuvers. After all that, the ocean needed a break, and heat #2 suffered a bit from wave starvation. Darren Muschett knows every square inch of reef out there, and found the right ones to give him the heat win.
The women’s semi-finals matched Anastasia Ashley vs. Quincy Davis in heat #1, and Liza Caban vs. Jasset Umbel in heat #2. In heat #1, Anastasia Ashley started off with a 5.67 for the early lead and then used superior wave selection to reach her second final in a row. Quincy may have just been too excited and who wouldn’t be? After she went for a wave that fizzled out, Anastasia secured priority to close out Quincy but not before she had won the crowd and gained a loyal fanbase. In the second heat, Jasset Umbel roller coastered with some fine rail work and surfed extremely fast. But maybe too fast, as she streaked by sections instead of taking advantage of the scoring opportunities. Liza didn’t miss a chance. Even if it sectioned off in front of her, Liza would whack it with everything she had. That radical approach gained favor with the judges who reward critical, progressive surfing, and Liza was not to be denied another trip to the final at Domes. The men’s semi-finals matched up Hector Santamaria vs. Eric Torres in heat #1, and Carlos Cabrero vs. Darren Muschett in #2. There really was no loser in heat #1 as the two friends surfed before a packed beach like it was a little free-surf, but without the crowds. No nerves, no rookie mistakes, no indications that hundreds of dollars were at stake between the difference of winning and losing. Hector had several impressive rides, and exploded the lip on one spectacular bash in particular, but didn’t catch the better waves in the heat. Eric picked off a beauty and just ripped it to shreds for the highest wave score of the event, an 8.87. He got a solid back up wave, working it to the inside with a series of cutbacks. That gave him a 14.8 heat total for the highest of the event and an extra $500 from Coppertone. The waves continued to improve throughout the afternoon offering more opportunity. But by the second heat, the secret left Carlos had worked so effectively in the previous round just wasn’t working the same with a shift in tide. He put on a terrific show, milking whatever he could out of the waves he caught. But Darren sat out the back, patiently waiting for the right one. That’s where the local knowledge comes in. He paddled into a walled up right and threw down a gouge Occy would be proud of. In the end, his familiarity with Domes paved the way to his first professional final. The women’s final featured the #1 ranked surfer Anastasia Ashley against last year’s Domes finalist, Liza Caban. Since that time last year, Liza’s surfing has improved dramatically and her confidence level continues to rise. She came into the event super motivated, quietly claiming that she was going to win this time. That confidence carried right on through the final, with Liza riding a tremendous wave of crowd support. Liza got an early lead with 5.17, then wisely secured priority when Anastasia took a closeout. From there she dictated the heat, and when the countdown began the crowd went crazy. Family and friends met her in the water to give her the “Emperor’s Chair” victory ride up the beach in an emotionally charged moment. The men’s final was the first professional final for both Darren Muschett and Eric Torres. The lead bounced back and forth several times. First Eric had a 4.73, then Darren topped that with a 5.93, then Eric came back with his own 5.93 only to be topped again when Darren picked up a 5.83 for a second wave. But it all boiled down to a critical exchange at the three minute mark. Eric took the first wave of a good set, snapping and slashing all the way to the inside for a 6.4, only to kickout and see Darren carving the one behind to pieces. Darren’s wave lined up all the way through and he nailed down the second highest wave score of the event, an 8.4. That effectively put an end to the Cinderella Story of the event, Eric Torres and gave Darren his first professional victory at his home beach. If you happened to miss any of the action, remember you can catch all the action with “Heat on Demand” on www.apspr.net. The second stop on the Corona Extra Pro Surf Circuit comes to the world famous Playa Domes and whether you’re into watching scantily clad sun worshipers, migrating whales, or hard-core surf action, you wont want to miss it. The surf’s been cranking lately, with plenty of juice to keep the locals stoked. We’re keeping our fingers crossed that our luck will continue, and Domes will come through with the goods. Quality events in quality waves have made the Corona events the most prestigious in the region. Competitors from dozens of countries will come to the historic shores of Domes to try their luck and earn their share of the $15,000 purse. Season Update Can anyone stop Dylan Graves? He enjoys the early lead for the Circuit Crown having won the season opener at Middles as well as the previous event at Domes. But if anyone is going to spoil his bid for a record three in a row, it might be 2-time Corona Circuit Champ, Brian Toth, currently in 9th place, who looks for his own 3-peat. Currently 2nd on the rankings is the goofy footed phenom Gaby Escudero followed closely by fellow Puerto Ricans Tommy Bursian and Carlos Cabrero. With a good result at Domes, anyone can get themselves into contention for the Corona Crown. Also expected to compete are some of the hottest surfers from around the region, including WQS workhorse Asher Nolan, up and coming rippers like Floridians Jeremy Johnston and Ryan Briggs, as well as Nils Sweitzer, who surfed all the way to the finals last year in Rincon. On the ladies side, Anastasia Ashley won the Middles event on her very first trip ever to Puerto Rico. She’ll see if she can keep the streak alive and go 2 for 2 with a win at Domes. That is, unless any of the other incredibly talented ladies have anything to say about it, like 2nd ranked Amy Nichol who seems to get stronger with every event, or Corona Extra Circuit Champ Maria Del Mar. Last year’s Cinderella story, Liza Caban, is looking strong and poised for another run. About Domes The legendary Domes is primarily a right pointbreak, and works when waves are anywhere from 2' on up to 15'. Located just to the north side of the Lighthouse in Rincon, Playa Domes is one of the most classic waves in Puerto Rico. Championship surfing has taken place at Domes since 1968 and has hosted some of the most significant surfing events in the Carribean and the world. The 1968 World Championship was held for the first time in Puerto Rico at Domes and won by Fred Hemmings. The ISA World Masters Surfing Championship was held last January, with local and two-time Corona Extra Surfing Champ Juan Ashton taking a world title home for Puerto Rico. The last international event at Domes was the Championship of the Corona Extra Pro Surf Circuit, held in March, 2007. Current points leader of the circuit, Dylan Graves, and Floridian fun-girl Connie Arias, won their respective categories. Entertainment Corona will just about take over the town of Rincon, with over 35 establishments having promotions. Live music, dancing, DJ’s, kareoke- whatever you’re into, it’s all there. CORONA EXTRA SURF CIRCUIT CROWNS CHAMPIONS! Corona Extra Surf Circuit

Event # 1 at Playa Middles, Isabela, Puerto Rico, concluded with the crowning of Corona Champions, Dylan Graves and Anastasia Ashley. All of the action can be seen on our innovative “Heats on Demand” available at www.apspr.net. The day began with two-time Corona Extra Champ, Brian Toth going down in a shocker in the first heat, a victim of wave selection and a timely air-reverse by Tommy Bursian who squeaked by behind heat winner David Santiago. It was anybody’s game from then on, and the competitors dug in for absolute war. William Sue Quan utilized his wave magnet to attract the best waves for his heat win, while Travis Beckman’s heat win was an exercise in patience. Having not ridden a wave in the first fifteen minutes, Travis unloaded with a 7.93 on a walled up set wave and consolidated the victory with a last minute thriller. In the final heat of Round 3, brothers Josie and Dylan Graves made it a family affair, advancing to face each other in the man- on-man Quarterfinals. The Women’s Round 2 was next, where defending Corona Extra Champ Connie Arias went down to a very in-form Anastasia Ashley and a smooth and stylish Tara Geiger. Lindsey Baldwin made a serious statement in the 2nd Heat, going vertical three times in succession on her backhand for a 7.33. Amy Nicholl looked quite comfortable in the conditions, and Crista Alves finished off the round with a nail biting win. From there we moved into the Quarterfinals of the Men’s and the man-on- man format. Tommy Bursian got up early in the heat with a long wave on his backhand, racking up several slashes for an 8.17. David Santiago searched for an answer, but when Tommy regained priority, he put the nail in the coffin with a second high scoring ride. Gabriel Escudero wowed the crowd with an impressive 15.83 heat total against William Sue Quan, the highest score up to that point. Carlos Cabrero seemed to get stronger as the day went on. When he needed it most, Carlos dug deep and pulled an 8.17 out of his hat to end the fairy tale run of Travis Beckman. Brotherly love was pushed aside as Josie and Dylan Graves took to the water for the last heat of the Quarters. With inclement weather moving in, Dylan had Josie in a combo situation until the heat was postponed until the weather blew over. 45 minutes later, the waves had glassed off, giving the competitors better conditions, and the brothers took to the water to conclude their heat. Josie was able to rack up an impressive ride, but couldn’t secure a second score as time ran out. In the Women’s Quarterfinal, Lindsey Baldwin, Amy Nicholl and Anastasia Ashley once again showed superior form and Lilac Alvarado used some last minute heroics to earn her spot in the woman-on-woman Semifinals. The women were right back out for the Semis, with one of the most interesting heats going down in the Lindsey Baldwin vs. Anastasia Ashley match-up. Both surfers were in exceptional form, accounting for 9 out of the top 10 waves for the event. Anastasia took the early lead with a solid right-hander, milking it all the way to the shorebreak, where her last maneuver landed her on the rocks and creased her board. Lindsey countered with a rare left, coming off the top strong for a 6.5, putting the pressure back on Anastasia. In the dying minutes, Anastasia was able to find the answer she needed, sending her on to the Finals. Amy Nicholl took the drama out of the second Semi, where she dominated the heat with a powerful and mature style, setting the stage for an all rookie Corona Final. The Men’s Semi # 1 featured two radical goofy footers, Tommy Bursian and Gabriel Escudero. Gabby grabbed the early lead with a flashy backhand that streaked across the line up. Tommy struggled to find the waves he needed, and when he fell on a desperate ariel attempt in the dying minutes, Gabby found his way to his first ever Corona Final. Semi # 2 pitted Carlos Cabrero against Dylan Graves, and saw some of the most exciting action of the event. Dylan took the early lead with an 8.0 in the opening exchange, but Carlos can never be counted out. He worked his way back into the lead, until Dylan unleashed a series of forehand gouges, top turns and lip smashes that earned the first 9 point ride of the event. There’s no quit in Carlos, and once again he came back, this time with a solid left punctuated by a smooth reverse to finish. But as time ran down, Dylan snagged a set wave and went ballistic, unleashing an entire bag of tricks on one wave and earning the highest score of the event with a 9.37, that left Carlos in a combo situation. Amy Nicholl and Anastasia Ashley took to the water to see who would take home top honors. The heat went back and forth, with the lead being exchanged several times. It all came down to the last minute, where Anastasia found a nice right wall and went to work on her forehand, doing one of the most critical cutbacks of the event as she worked it all the way through. The judges rewarded her for her efforts, and Anastasia’s 10.17 heat total narrowly eclipsed the 10.0 that Amy posted, giving Anastasia the Corona Crown. The Men’s Final came down to the best surfers of the event. Between them, Gabriel Escudero and Dylan Graves posted the 6 highest heat totals of the event, and the two looked evenly matched. It was a tight heat, with the lead going back and forth throughout. Gabby held the upper hand as time ran down inside five minutes, with Dylan holding priority but needing a strong 6 point ride to take the lead. Dylan sat patiently, waiting for his chance, and when a wedgey right came through with a minute to go, he let loose like he doesn’t know the meaning of pressure. Dylan completed a huge tail sliding off the top and worked it to the inside to take the lead, then nervously counted the seconds as time ran out on Gabby before he could find an answer, giving Dylan another Corona Crown.

Dylan Graves and Connie Arias APSPR Domes’ Event Champions
APSPR, Corona Extra Pro Surf Circuit March 9 - 11, 2007 Playa Domes, Rincón Puerto Rico

The Corona Extra Pro Surf Circuit Domes’ Event was won by Dylan Graves and Connie Arias in what concluded a spectacular weekend.
Make sure to catch the innovative “Heats on Demand” action on www.apspr.net. You’ll have access to every scoring ride of the event, of every heat. You can scan the draw, and select which heat you would like to view. Each scoring ride will be shown, along with the points earned for that wave. Just in case you missed the thrills at the beach, or simply want to watch the ripping.
Competitors were greeted by waist high clean lines this morning at the famous Domes beach, and even though the waves have dropped since yesterday, the action continued to blaze. Surfers surviving the first two rounds yesterday meet up with the seeded surfers for Round 3 this morning, to see who would advance to the money round. In trying conditions, competitors made the most of every opportunity, and the rides that went down are a testament to how good the competitors are. On both the men’s and women’s side, heats were won with committed, radical surfing. Highlights from the morning include Leslie Bursian’s fine rail work and Nil Schweizer’s combination of maneuvers. Jeremy Johnston continued his tear, while Nico Moreda seemed to find another gear as he blazed to his heat victory.
The Women’s Quarter-finals displayed some serious ripping by the female competitors. Ornella Pellizzari was going upside down on her backside to advance with Connie Arias. In the second heat, youngsters Liza Caban and Quincy Davis gave us a glimpse of the future as both ripped their way to advance to the Semi-final.
The waves for Round #4 were more consistent, and heat scores reflected this. In the first heat, Carlos Cabrero surfed like a man on a mission. Heat # 2 saw the highest scores of the event. The lead changed back and forth and when the dust finally settled, Nils Schweizer and Jeremy Johnston found their way into the Quarter-finals. Gabriel Escudero threw out the highest single wave score so far, but couldn’t overcome the consistency of Dylan Graves and Darren Mushette.
By the time the Quarter-finals got under way, a timely increase of swell gave the conditions for the competitors to up the ante. Nils Schweizer threw out smooth round-house cutbacks and backed it up with an effortless air to sweep the heat. Jeremy Johnston continued posting high scores, but was overtaken in the final exchange by the lone Puerto Rican Carlos Cabrero, who showed how savvy a competitor he is. In the second heat, Darren Muschette used his local knowledge to advance, and a very workman like Dylan Graves kept building on his wave count, and by the time he was finished, had enough in his account to take the win. The women’s side produced the Cinderella Story of the event. In a thrilling moment for the local girl Liza Caban and the entire beach, the 14 year old surfed her way into the final in her very first Corona event. Riding the emotion of the crowd, she overcame a polished Quincy Davis. In the other Semi, Connie Arias survived an onslaught by Ornella Pellizzari who’s rapidly earning lots of recognition and respect.
In Semi-final # 1, Nils Schweitzer came out swinging, and never let up. Every wave was a potential keeper, but it was his tail throwing, fin free top turns that got the big points. He ended up putting the local legend, Carlos Cabrero in a combo situation. The win was so convincing, Nils even won over the partisan crowd, who applauded the tremendous exhibition. Semi-final #2 was the closest heat of the event as Darren Muschette and Dylan Graves went wave for wave, exchanging the lead throughout the heat. Inside of 10 minutes, Darren unleashed a silky smooth air to take the lead. With time running down, Dylan takes off in the final minute, knowing he needs a 7 pointer to overtake Darren. Dylan ruthlessly took the wave apart, combining deep carving cutbacks with a variety of fin free top turns, posting an 8.67 to launch him into the final. Pressure, what pressure? Connie Arias put an end to the Cinderella Story, collecting $2000 for her win. Her experience served her well, putting the pressure on the young Liza Caban after posting two rides in the 6 point range. Liza gave it her all, trying desperately to pull off the most radical off the lips, but falling just short. The crowd cheered regardless, as she was the people’s champion. The Men’s Final pitted the two most impressive surfers of the event, Nils Sweitzer and Dylan Graves. Dylan took the early lead, and never looked back. Nils fought back valiantly, staying within striking distance considering the scores he posted through the entire event. But in the dying moments of the final, Dylan used his priority to put the nail in the coffin. With the crowd going crazy on the beach, many of Dylan’s friends who had been seen hanging dangerously close to the Corona tent prepared to give him the Emperor’s Chair Ride to the victory platform.

The APSPR has a tradition of holding quality events in quality waves. This edition of the Corona Extra Pro Surf Circuit continued the tradition. Surfers from South America, North America, and the Carribean came to test their mettle against the pack of hot locals. In fact, this is the largest number of competitors in the history of the Corona Extra Pro Surf Circuit. The proven format and professional staff provide the competitors with invaluable experience as well as an opportunity to take home some serious cash. Head judge Mike Martin and his highly trained judging panel show that there’s no replacing experience. Surfers can be confident that their results here would stand up anywhere, and when they go on to compete in any ASP event, they will be ready.
